- Is a required rotation for all senior students and offered at two different hospital sites (JCMC/HVMC).
Senior Students Academic Half Day: During the Sub-Internship, students are required to attend the M4 academic half day
(AHD) regardless of students primary assignment venue. The AHD is a mandatory educational
activity held weekly on Thursday afternoons during the Sub-Internship. It is from
1-5pm in Building 1 VA campus, Room B-06 in the basement, located next to the Standardized
Patient Center. Standardized curriculum for the Medicine Sub-internship includes a
combination of core conferences on Cardinal Manifestations of Disease (common patient
complaints faced by interns regardless of specialty), and case-based discussions reinforcing
the core conferences. A live group feedback session will also be held each block,
along with a core session on systems-based practice. Lectures are presented by teaching
staff, fellows and chief residents.
AHD usual schedule and speakers:
Week 1: System Based Practice, Chest X-Ray, Antibiotics, Rotation Expectations with Dr. Ibrahim
Week 2: Acid Base Imbalance, Chest Pain
Week 3: Abdominal Pain, Dyspnea
Week 4: Hypoglycemia/Hyperglycemia, Rotation Feedback with Dr. Ibrahim
A live group feedback session will also be held each block, along with a core session on systems-based practice and a career planning session. Lectures presented by teaching staff, fellows and chief residents.
Evaluation
Students performance will be observed and informally evaluated at all times by the
attending physicians of clinical rotations. Standardized evaluation forms will be
used at the end of rotations. The attending physicians will be notified electronically
through New Innovations to complete the evaluations. After the evaluation is completed
the clerkship secretary retrieves it and notates it on the Banner System and forwards
it to Student Affairs. Registrars office record evaluation grade. It is pass/fail
grading.
Absences
Due to the short length of each Senior Internal Medicine Selective/electives, 100%
attendance will be expected. Excused absence should be approved by the course director.
