Internal Medicine Residency
Program Overview
The primary mission of the Internal Medicine Residency Program is to train future physicians with a strong interest in primary care and subspecialties, especially those dedicated to serving rural and underserved communities. The program prepares residents to become competent internists, evidence-based researchers, and committed educators for both future physicians and the broader community.
Academic Half Day provides protected weekly time for didactics. Faculty, fellows, residents and interdisciplinary teams lead case-based and interactive sessions on subspecialty and practical topics, including coding, billing and wound care. The schedule includes the Department of Medicine Education Conference, longitudinal board review, core lectures, monthly forums and presentation practice.
To support ongoing learning, the program provides MKSAP 19 and UWorld for every resident. The Yale curriculum is incorporated twice daily during each clinic block to reinforce key ambulatory concepts, and residents have access to UpToDate while on inpatient services.
All categorical residents are assigned to a continuity clinic at ETSU Health Internal Medicine in either Johnson City or Kingsport, where they care for patients over three years and focus on preventive, acute and chronic care. They also participate in weekly ambulatory teaching, track quality metrics and complete a long-term quality improvement project tied to their clinic.
