Overview of ROTC
Army ROTC offers the broadest path for young men and women seeking to serve the nation as Army officers to achieve their goal. For nearly a century, Army ROTC has provided college students with the opportunity to combine world-class leadership and management training with their other academic studies. The state-of-the-art curriculum, which consists of a series of experiences, gives students the necessary foundation to serve successfully in positions of responsibility in either America's Army or the corporate world.
Those with a strong academic background, an active mindset and the ability to rapidly assimilate information thrive in the program. These scholar-athlete-leaders (SALs) note that the leadership skills developed through their participation in the program are further honed during their period of service as Army officers. After service as an Army lieutenant, many graduates elect to remain in the military and ultimately rise to positions of great responsibility. Other elect to enter the corporate world, where their leadership skills and experience as ROTC-trained Army officers allow them to advance rapidly.
Examples of those who have achieved success in their chosen field of endeavor as a consequence of their ROTC training are plentiful. Army ROTC is proud to number Sam Walton, found of Wal-Mart; Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State; Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito; football legend Lou Holtz and Astronaut Nancy Currie among the more than half-million men and women who have graduated from the program since its inception.
Although the program is designed to be completed in four years, students may complete all requirements within a two-year period through participation in a summer training session called the Leader's Training Course. A generous series of merit-based scholarships that pay full tuition are available to help students and their families defray the cost of college tuition. Additionally, those on Army ROTC scholarship receive $1,200 annually to pay for books and supplies. Tax-free stipends of up to $500 per month are also available to those meeting course requirements.
