Dan Mahoney
In 1966, Dan Mahoney graduated from East Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in business management and, through the ETSU ROTC program, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. For the next year, he served in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps in Thailand. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve for the next 10 years.
After his military commitment, he returned to Johnson City to assist with the family business, an Army-Navy supply store which has become a landmark. As president of Mahoney’s Outdoor Outfitters, he has seen his store grow more than ten times in size and a new outlet added in Abingdon, Va.
Active in civic affairs, he was elected to the Johnson City Commission for 12 years and served as mayor of the city. In addition, he has served as chair and board member of the Johnson City Board of Education and the Johnson City Planning Commission.
Recognizing the importance the military played in his success, he sponsors an ETSU ROTC annual award which is given to a second-year cadet.
Inducted into the College of Business and Technology Hall of Fame, he serves on that college’s board of advisors. A past president of the ETSU Alumni Association, he is secretary of the board of directors of the ETSU Foundation. He and his wife are members of the ETSU Distinguished President’s Trust.
His wife, ETSU Class of 1966 member Katie, and their son, Sean, an ETSU alumnus, also work at Mahoney’s, making the operation a true family business.
