Jere Hickman
Brigadier General (Ret.) Jere Hickman
General Hickman was born April 11, 1932 in West Union, West Virginia. His family moved to East Tennessee in 1933, and he attended schools in the area graduating from Science Hill High School in 1951. Entering East Tennessee State University that same year, he graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a United States Army Commission through the ROTC Program.
He entered the active Army in August, 1956 and served in various airborne field artillery assignments for the next several years.
Following a combat tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam, General Hickman attended the Command and General Staff College of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1966. Some of his key assignments have been: Assignment Officer, Officer Personnel Directorate, Washington, DC; Battalion Commander 2/84th Field Artillery Battalion, Fort Carson, Colorado; Commander, Support Group Northern Italy; Commander XVIII Airborne Corps Artillery, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Chief of Staff, 7th Infantry Division, Fort Ord, California and Chief of Staff, 6th U.S. Army, Presidio of San Francisco, California.
General Hickman is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College and received his Master’s Degree from Shippensburg College in 1974.
He was a master parachutist and was awarded the Army Aircrewman’s badge. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal; the Bronze Star; three awards of Meritorious Service Medal; two awards of the Army Commendation Medal; the Humanitarian Services Medal and others.
Upon his retirement from the Army, General Hickman served as Manager of Advanced Programs at Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee in Jonesborough.
