Campus Hazing Transparency Report
ETSU is committed to providing a community that is free from hazing. Hazing represents a violation of the institutional disciplinary policy and state law TCA 49-7-123 (a) (1) and will not be tolerated.
The university assigns the following definition to hazing:
Hazing, as defined in TCA § 49-7-123(a)(1), means any intentional or reckless act, on or off the property, of any higher education institution by an individual acting alone, or with others, which is directed against any other person(s) that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of that person(s), or which induces or coerces a person(s) to endanger such person(s) mental or physical health or safety. Hazing does not include customary athletic events or similar contests or competitions, and is limited to those actions taken and situations created in connection with initiation into or affiliation with any organization.
The Federal Anti-Hazing Law: Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA) was enacted on December 23, 2024, making amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965. The SCHA has three important aspects: (1) the addition of hazing to Clery reporting requirements and campuses’ Annual Security Report (2) the requirement of campus-wide, research-based hazing prevention programs and policies (3) increased transparency regarding organizations that have violated campus hazing policy through the publication of a Campus Hazing Transparency Report.
The university will publish information regarding any student organization that has been found responsible for violating hazing. This is limited to student organizations who were officially recognized/registered by the university at the time of the investigation. Reports of hazing that did not result in a finding of responsibility are not included. Any student organization under active investigation will not appear in the Campus Hazing Transparency Report. The University will update this information each year.
