Aquatics
Lifeguards:
- Lifeguards must be American Red Cross Lifeguard certified
- Ensure patron safety on pool deck and in water
- Maintain clean and sanitary work area
- Work as part of a team to provide preventative attention and response in emergency situations

Operations
Facility Assistants:
- Provide customer service, assistance, and information to facility users
Work as a team to ensure the operation of a safe and clean facility
Enforce facility policies related to facility access, dress code, safety, and security
Perform Equipment Desk duties including, but not limited to, operating recreational services software, providing checkout and check-in services of locker keys and equipment, and towel/laundry service
Assist with the set-up, break-down, and cleanup of special events held within the facility

Fitness
Group Fitness Instructors:
- Provide exceptional customer service to group fitness participants
- Work as a team to ensure the successful operation of group fitness initiatives and promote others’ classes
Enforce facility policies related to facility access, dress code, safety, and security
Perform duties including, but not limited to, teaching recurring group fitness classes, tracking participants via the CPA Member Portal, and maintaining studio cleanliness
Assist with the set-up, break-down, and cleanup of special fitness events held within the facility
Knowledge of the facility’s Emergency Action Plan and respond to incidents and accidents within the facility as prescribed by the EAP
Attend scheduled trainings at the beginning of each semester and monthly meetings
Other duties as assigned
Personal Trainers:
- Provide exceptional customer service to personal training clients
Work as a team to conduct personal training promotion events such as Trainer Tuesday
Enforce facility policies related to facility access, dress code, safety, and security
Perform duties including, but not limited to, conducting free consultations, providing effective training to clients, leading small group training programs, tracking participant progress and completion, maintaining client confidentiality and records, and assisting with special events
Assist with the set-up, break-down, and cleanup of special fitness events held within the facility
Knowledge of the facility’s Emergency Action Plan and respond to incidents and accidents within the facility as prescribed by the EAP
Attend scheduled trainings at the beginning of each semester and monthly meetings
Other duties as assigned
Personal Trainers and Group Fitness Instructors are required to hold an American Red Cross CPR/AED Certification and a group fitness or personal training certification from a nationally recognized agency.

Wellness
Fitness and Wellness Assistants:
- Provide customer service, assistance and information to Wellness Corner users
Work as a team to ensure the successful operation of wellness initiatives
Enforce facility policies related to facility access, dress code, safety, and security
Perform duties including, but not limited to, cleaning of the Wellness Corner or fitness studios, restocking Wellness Corner supplies (coffee/tea bar, snacks, coloring pages, crayons, pamphlets, etc.), completing laundry including Wellness Corner and Yoga blankets and accessories, and preparing a variety of items for events
Assist with the set-up, break-down, and cleanup of special events held within the facility
Knowledge of the facility’s Emergency Action Plan and respond to incidents and accidents within the facility as prescribed by the EAP
Attend scheduled trainings at the beginning of each semester and monthly meetings
Other duties as assigned
Wellness Ambassadors:
- Provide customer service and coaching to Wellness Coaching clients
Work as a team to ensure the successful operation of wellness initiatives
Enforce facility policies related to facility access, dress code, safety, and security
Perform duties including, but not limited to, creating materials for the Wellness Corner (pamphlets, activities, etc.), preparing materials for wellness seminars, programs, and events, present wellness seminars, programs, and events, and maintain client confidentiality and tracking
Assist with the set-up, break-down, and cleanup of special events held within the facility and across campus
Knowledge of the facility’s Emergency Action Plan and respond to incidents and accidents within the facility as prescribed by the EAP
Attend scheduled trainings at the beginning of each semester and monthly meetings
Other duties as assigned

Intramural Sports
Officials:
- Provide fair application of the playing rules during intramural competition including, but not limited to: flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball

Outdoor Adventure
OA Attendants:
- Assist patrons by providing basic climbing safety information and demonstrating proper climbing technique and belay instruction
- Administer and manage registration for programs, belay certification tests, and other related materials
- Provide team building and aerial adventure course facilitation for organized groups and open high challenge course programs
- Facilitate discussions, encourage participants, and support individuals and groups in their learning experience
- Attend in-service trainings and meetings
- OA Attendants must be American Red Cross CPR/AED certified
- Other certifications, such as Wilderness First Aid, ACCT Challenge Course Facilitator I, or PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor, are recommended but not required

Marketing & Communications
Graphic Designer
The Graphic Designer will assist with providing promotional designs, creating displays, facility signage, brochures, social media content, and other marketing materials for ETSU Campus Recreation’s facilities and programs.
Minimum Requirements
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in graphic design, digital media, or a related field
- Experience working in programs such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Procreate, or Canva
- Must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work evening/weekend Campus Recreation events

Videographer
Assist with photography, videography, storytelling, social media content, and other marketing materials for ETSU Campus Recreation’s facilities and programs.

Graduate Assistant Positions
The Department of Campus Recreation at East Tennessee State University is seeking four (4) graduate assistants for 2025-2026 academic year in the following areas: sport programs (1), wellness (1), marketing (1), and facility operations & aquatics (1).
The goal of our graduate assistantship program is to foster the development of up-and-coming recreational professionals by immersing them in a hands-on recreational facility. Graduate assistants will gain knowledge in their primary program area, as well as student employee management and development, leadership theory, and risk management.
Payment & Compensation
Tuition waiver (eligible for both in-state/out of state students); Stipend of a minimum
of $12,600 for academic year; Funding for professional development including NIRSA
sponsored state, regional, and national events and conferences; Opportunity for hourly
summer employment.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Graduate
assistants must be admitted to the ETSU graduate school and accepted to their graduate
program of choice. All graduate assistants must be currently certified in American
Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid or obtain certification within 45 days of employment.
All positions require a successful evaluation to renew for second year. Graduate assistants must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Graduate assistant may work early mornings, evening, weekends, and during extended university breaks (fall break/spring break).

Sport Programs Graduate Assistantship
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Sport Programs, the Sport Programs Graduate Assistant will assist with the comprehensive planning and coordination of a comprehensive Intramural Sports and Sport Club program. ETSU has two (2) graduate assistants in Sport Programs. For 2025-2026, we are seeking to hire one (1) graduate assistant in Sport Programs.
Job Duties
- Assist the Assistant Director of Sport Programs with the management of a comprehensive intramural sports program.
- Assist with officials’ clinics, training, and evaluation for major sports including flag football, volleyball, soccer, basketball and softball.
- Perform administrative functions for the intramural program. Examples include planning, scheduling, performing assessments and evaluations, holding disciplinary meetings with participants, etc.
- Assist in league and tournament scheduling and management; take the lead in planning and managing special leagues and tournaments including kickball, dodgeball, eSports, etc.
- Assist in recruiting, training, evaluation, and supervision of undergraduate student workers who perform as Officials, Supervisors, and Program Assistants.
- Assist with program evaluation, revision and implementation of all rules and policies.
- Execute special events and other initiatives with the intramural program.
- Work with campus partners to grow intramural presence on campus.
- Assist with sport club trainings and officer meetings.
- Attend club sport events and perform practice check-ins.
- Assist with sport events & competitions.
- Manage travel requests for sport clubs.
- Attends bi-monthly Campus Recreation staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One (1) year of experience as an undergraduate intramural staff member.
- Experience as an official either within Intramural Sports or in high school sports.
- Experience with NIRSA regional & national events (conferences, tournaments, etc.)
- Must be available to work nights/weekends.

Wellness Graduate Assistantship
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Student Wellness, the Graduate Assistant of Student Wellness will assist with Campus Recreation programs pertaining to outreach events for Alcohol and Other Drugs, Stress Management, Sexual Health, Nutrition, Sleep, and Tobacco Cessation, among others.
Job Duties:
- Assist with recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of wellness staff.
Schedule, plan, and perform large-scale wellness events and outreach seminars on a variety of topics. - Assist with design and implementation of wellness initiatives across campus.
- Assist with implementation and program delivery of wellness seminars and special events.
- Assist with in-service trainings including American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid.
- Assist in monitoring program spending and expenses.
- Input program offerings and special events in online scheduling software (InnoSoft Fusion).
- Assist marketing team with necessary materials and production of elements to promote wellness events.
- Participate in budget creation and payroll projection for wellness staff.
- Collaborate with campus-based members to schedule and deliver special events and reservations.
- Attend bi-monthly Campus Recreation staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in fitness and wellness programming.
- A certification in wellness (Health Coach, Certified Peer Educator) or ability to obtain within the first semester.

Marketing & Communications Graduate Assistantship
Reporting to the Coordinator of Fitness and Marketing, the Graduate Assistant of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the design, implementation, and management of all marketing materials and strategies for all program areas within the Department of Campus Recreation. This includes Aquatics, Facility Operations, Fitness, Intramurals, Outdoor Adventure, Sport Programs, and Student Wellness.
Job Duties:
- Assist with the marketing and promotion of Campus Recreation programs and services to the campus community, aiming to enhance growth, visibility, and participation.
- Assist with the development of written, visual, and multimedia content, which includes marketing copy, photography, and video production to showcase the programs within the department.
- Maintain a working knowledge of all equipment, programs, and services offered by Campus Recreation.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Campus Recreation’s personas and utilize them strategically.
- Assist with the recruitment, hiring, supervising, and training of student marketing team members that includes student graphic designers, photographers, and videographers.
- Attend and assist with campus-wide orientations and events to increase on-campus publicity and visibility by engaging with students to inform them of the programs and services that Campus Recreation offers.
- Frequently update and maintain the Campus Recreation website using Modern Campus CMS, ensuring accessibility and usability for all visitors, while also monitoring and managing TV promotional displays using REACH.
- Assist in managing ETSU Campus Recreation’s social media platforms, intentionally including and highlighting the diversity of each program area.
- Stay informed about social media and marketing trends, utilizing these trends as needed to maintain relevance.
- Assist with in-service trainings, including American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid.
- Attend bi-monthly Campus Recreation staff meetings.

Facility Operations & Aquatics Graduate Assistantship
Reporting to the Coordinator of Operations & Aquatics, the Graduate Assistant of Operations & Aquatics will assist with the oversight of a 120,000 square foot recreation center that includes an 8-lane, indoor swimming pool.
Job Duties:
- Assists in the recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation, and supervision of Operations and Aquatics student staff members that serve as Facility Assistants and Lifeguards.
- Support the Coordinator of Operations and Aquatics with scheduling staff using WhenToWork software for all facility hours, programming, and special events (staffing, setup, breakdown) and assume responsibility for filling in if necessary.
- Assist in leading semester and monthly in-service training.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of all emergency action plan procedures and be responsible for daily and weekly facility walk-throughs and inspections.
- Participate in instructing Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR classes for the campus and community.
- Assist in monitoring staff certifications, monthly CPR checks and other record keeping.
- Maintain paperwork, spreadsheets, filing, and participation counts with regards to Aquatic Programs.
- Assist in inputting maintenance work orders and communicating with University facilities regarding status of projects.
- Assist in minor fitness equipment maintenance and coordinates equipment maintenance repair with contracted technician and student maintenance team.
- Ensure equipment inventory is up-to-date in Recreation Management Software and assist. the coordinator in surplus and replenishing daily use equipment as needed.
- Complete monthly, semester, and annual reports on facility usage.
- Attend bi-monthly Campus Recreation staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and, or the ability to obtain during the first 45 days of employment *Department will cover expense of certifications
- American Red Cross LGI and American Red Cross WSI, or ability to obtain within 6 months from start date. *Department will cover expense of certifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- One (1) year of experience working in a collegiate recreation department, recreational program, collegiate athletics, or related field.
- Experience with When2Work employee scheduling software, Innosoft Fusion Recreation Software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
