Nomination
Your home university must have a current formal exchange agreement with ETSU and must nominate you before you apply. Exchange and study abroad coordinators, please send nominations to Courtney Lucas at lucascp@etsu.edu. Nomination emails should include the students' names, email addresses, programs of study, year, and the term they wish to attend ETSU (i.e. Spring 2026, Academic Year 2026-2027, etc.).
Application
After your nomination has been accepted, complete the steps below to apply. Early applications are encouraged to allow for more time for your visa process.
Nomination and application due dates:
- Spring semester (January - May): October 1
- Fall semester (August - December): May 1

Step 1: Check Classes
Search and check classes
First, find the classes you would like to take for your exchange semester or year. Follow any procedures that your home university may have to approve your classes.

- View course descriptions by clicking "Course Descriptions" under the "Academics at ETSU" heading
Things to check
- Make sure that your desired courses will be held during the term you plan to study at ETSU by clicking on the individual course description and viewing the schedule.
- Check any prerequisites for your desired courses.
Course restrictions
- Nearly all undergraduate programs and classes at ETSU are open to exchange students.
- Please keep in mind that some courses may become full quickly, and the earlier you can complete application and registration steps the better your chances of registering for your desired courses. Please have some extra backup courses and plan to be flexible.
- Some upper-level business classes and some teacher training classes that require a federal background check may be restricted.
- Music or other performing arts classes may require auditions.

Step 2: Apply Online
Complete the online application linked here.
- Apply as an undergraduate international student
- Use your full legal name as it appears on your passport
- Pay the application fee
- In certain cases, your application fee may be waived according to your university's exchange agreement with ETSU. If this is the case, please email lucascp@etsu.edu before paying the application fee.

Step 3: Send Documents
Send the following documents to higginsv@etsu.edufor your application:
- Copy of your passport ID page
- Copy of your transcript
- [Depending on your home country] Copy of your English language proficiency test results or a statement of proficiency from your home university's English department. See English proficiency requirements here.
Acceptance Letter
You will receive an email from ETSU Admissions with an attached acceptance letter within a few weeks of your application if you are accepted.
- Your acceptance letter will have your student ID number (E number) which you will need in the future.
- Your acceptance email will also contain information for your student visa application.
