    Specific aims of project: To conduct rural research to assist providers and policy-makers at the federal, State and local levels to better understand problems faced by rural communities. This research informs population health improvement efforts, including health care access and delivery.

    Specific aims of project: To develop an innovative thematic research network to study peer recovery supports among individuals with opioid use disorder in Central Appalachia. Studies to Advance Recovery Support (STARS) will provide a range of services, resources, tools to investigators and research teams across our founding institutions and respective communities.

    Specific aims of project: To implement Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) within a primary care setting to include training all residents, physicians and staff and incorporating the use of Certified Peer Recovery Specialist.

    Specific aims of project:  Full-scale implementation of evidenced based substance abuse prevention strategies utilizing SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to reduce underage drinking and prescription drug abuse in Watauga County.

    Dates and costs of entire project: 3-year recurring cycle from 1992-2013; $140,000 annually
    Specific aims of project:  Implement and support population level substance abuse prevention strategies based on community needs assessment. Convene local policy makers, agencies, and schools to develop comprehensive community-wide action plans. Report outcomes annually for each service county: Ashe, Allegheny, Avery, Watauga, and Wilkes.

    Specific aims of project:  Implement evidenced based prevention and therapeutic activities for high risk adjudicated or indicated youth during after school and summer hours.  Utilize the Project Venture evidenced based curriculum to incorporate adventure components in overall program design.  Serve as an advocate and liaison among all involved agencies and the client family.

    Specific aims of project: Implement evidenced based prevention and tutoring services for at-risk middle school youth during after school hours.  Coordinate transportation services for community based programs and facilitate the development of in-school programming. Liaise between school, family, and community agencies to provide comprehensive countywide after school programming to universal and selected youth.

    Specific aims of project:  Partner with public school systems to implement evidenced based after school programming to low-performing and at-risk middle school youth in 7 rural counties in NW NC. Primary objective is to build protective factors that support academic success.  Impact measured annually through grades and scores on end of grade tests.  Outcomes reported provided to each Superintendent and Board Members annually.
