El Nuevo Tennessean
From 2000 to 2018, the Language and Culture Resource Center, in cooperation with the Communication Department and the Department of Literature and Language, published eighteen annual editions of El Nuevo Tennessean, a bilingual newspaper (see below for a history of those publications).
Students from the Communication Department who were taking classes with Mary Alice Basconi were responsible for interacting directly with the community to seek out stories and articles and conduct interviews. At the same time, students who worked for the LCRC translated those articles written in English into Spanish. The purpose of the project was two-fold: First, to inform the Spanish-speaking community about the services and resources available to them in the area. Second, to inform the resident population about the culture and contributions of the Hispanic population.
This bilingual newspaper project provided an opportunity for students from various fields of study to enhance their communication ability and research skills. It was also a great resource for partnerships between the university and the community, and many other programs have been developed in association with El Nuevo Tennessean, including the development of an Applied Spanish Minor academic program, which institutionalized community outreach. There are copies of all editions in the LCRC office available upon request.
