Scholarships and Awards
The Department of Chemistry offers a number of scholarships and awards. In addition to the scholarships listed here, Chemistry participates in the Undergraduate Honors Research Program, which provides a stackable scholarship of up to $2,500/year. The application deadline for Fall 2026 has passed, but current students and new freshman can apply next year.
We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for Chemistry scholarships. Please note that eligibility requirements and selection criteria vary by scholarship; you may apply for as many as you are eligible.

Current Students: The deadline for receipt of applications is Monday, 16 Mar 26 at 11:59 pm. Decisions will be made by 1 Apr 26.
Accepted Applicants (first-time freshman, transfer and graduate): The deadline for receipt of applications is Monday, 30 Mar 26 at 11:59 pm. Decisions will be made by 15 Apr 26.

Scholarships
The John W. Adams Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry
The John W. Adams Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry is awarded to students who show good academic aptitude in the area of Chemistry and should demonstrate financial need. Scholarships may be renewable if funds are available.
Current Students: Use the common application for Adams, Dugger and Fallgatter scholarships.
Accepted Applicants: Use the new student application for the Adams and Fallgatter scholarships.
The Delmas & Wanda Blevins Dugger Endowed Scholarship
The Delmas and Wanda Blevins Dugger Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship assistance to deserving students pursuing a major in Chemistry at ETSU. Applicants must have completed a minimum of two semesters at ETSU, with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better; must have declared Chemistry as a major at ETSU; must have 8.0 credit hours (two semesters) in General Chemistry; and should have demonstrated financial need. Preference shall be given to students residing in the Tennessee counties of Carter, Johnson, Sullivan, Washington and Unicoi. If funds are available, the scholarship may be renewed upon re-application provided the student maintains a GPA of 3.0 or better and receives no grade lower than a "B" (3.0) in any Chemistry course.
Anticipated scholarship amounts are $500-1000.

The Karen and Michael Fallgatter Endowed Scholarship
The Karen and Michael Fallgatter Chemistry Scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a degree in the Department of Chemistry at ETSU and have demonstrated financial need. All undergraduate students, including entering freshmen and transfer students, graduate students, and honor students meeting these criteria are eligible. Recipients may reapply annually. The anticipated scholarship amount is $1000-1500.
Accepted Undergraduate Applicants: Use the new student application for the Adams and Fallgatter scholarships.
Current Graduate Students: Use the Graduate Application for the Fallgatter scholarship.
The Thomas T.-S. Huang Chemistry Endowed Scholarship
The Thomas T. S. Huang Chemistry Scholarship is for entering freshmen who have made a strong commitment to major in chemistry, or a current chemistry major who meets the criteria for the award of a scholarship. It was established by the Department of Chemistry at ETSU to encourage students to study, major and pursue a career in chemistry.
The scholarship is renewable for a total of four years provided the recipient remains a Chemistry major and maintains an overall cumulative GPA of 2.70 as well as a GPA of 2.70 in all the Chemistry courses taken for a given academic year.
The selection criteria are academic performance and commitment to a major in Chemistry.
The anticipated award amount is $1,000/yr.

The Boris Franzus Endowed Chemistry Scholarship
The purpose of the Boris Franzus Endowment Fund is to generate scholarships for students who excel in organic chemistry. The scholarship may be awarded to any student, undergraduate or graduate, excelling in organic chemistry.
Successful applicants may re-apply in future years but will not be given priority over other applicants.
The anticipated award amount is $500–$1,000.

The Dr. Richard W. Kopp Chemistry Education Scholarship
The Dr. Richard W. Kopp Chemistry Education Scholarship Fund was established in Memory of Dr. Kopp by family and friends to generate scholarships for Chemistry Education majors.
Successful applicants may re-apply in future years but will not be given priority over other applicants.
The anticipated award amount is $500.

The Miss Margaret Sells Chemistry Scholarship
The Miss Margaret Sells Chemistry Scholarship Endowment was established in Miss Sells's
honor with gifts made by family and friends to generate scholarships for Chemistry
graduate students in the Master of Science degree program at ETSU.
To be considered for this award, you must have been accepted into the Chemistry M.S.
program (current M.S. and A.B.M. students are eligible).
Successful applicants may re-apply in future years but will not be given priority over other applicants.
The anticipated award amount is $1,000 for one year.
Application for the Miss Margaret Sells Chemistry Scholarship.
Awards
Awards are made each year on the basis of nomination and selection by the faculty; there is no application. They provide a one-time scholarship of $500–$1,000.
Thomas Whitehead Award
An award given to an outstanding chemistry major who has completed general chemistry, based on scholastic achievement.
Clifford Boyd Award
An award given to an outstanding chemistry major who has completed organic chemistry and quantitative analysis, based on scholastic achievement.
Douglas G. Nicholson Award
An award given to an outstanding chemistry major who has completed physical chemistry, based on scholastic achievement.
Outstanding Student Award
An award given to an outstanding chemistry major, typically a graduating senior.
TVHS-ACS Award
An award given to an outstanding senior by the Tennessee–Virginia Highlands Section of the American Chemical Society based on ETSU faculty recommendation.
Outstanding Graduate Student Award
An award given to an outstanding chemistry graduate student, typically one graduating.
Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award
An award given to an chemistry graduate student who is outstanding as a teaching assistant.
