What is Neurodiversity?
The range of differences in individual brain function and behavioral traits, regarded as part of normal variation in the human population
Rather than thinking there is something wrong or problematic when some people don't operate similarly to others, neurodiversity embraces the differences in both brain function and behavioral traits as a natural element of how diverse the human population is.
Those who are neurodivergent tend to find some things very easy and other things incredibly hard. This usually leads to an inconsistent performance at school or work.
Neurodivergence can be a competitive advantage when the individuals are in the right environment, making use of their strengths, instead of constantly trying to overcome challenges.
Neurodiverse conditions include but are not limited to:
- ADHD
- autism
- dyslexia
- dyspraxia
- dyscalculia
- sensory processing disorder
- Tourette syndrome
- traumatic brain injury
Any neurocognitive profile that is not “neurotypical” could be included.
