Services and Consultation
The Molecular Biology Core Facility (MBCF) provides technical expertise and research support throughout the experimental process. You do not need to know exactly which instrument or technique you need before contacting us.
If you have a research question or a technique that is not working as expected, contact the MBCF to discuss your project.
Experimental Design
The MBCF can provide consultation during the planning stage of a molecular biology project.
Consultation may include:
- Selecting appropriate molecular biology techniques
- Planning experimental approaches
- Identifying appropriate controls
- Selecting appropriate instrumentation
- Planning sample preparation
- Discussing strategies for obtaining and interpreting results
Both brief consultations and more in-depth project discussions are available. We can also attend lab meetings if your desire longitudinal support.
Molecular Biology Techniques
The MBCF provides expertise and support for a variety of molecular biology applications, including:
- PCR
- Quantitative PCR (qPCR)
- Primer design
- DNA sequencing
- Nucleic acid quantification
- Nucleic acid quality assessment
- Sample preparation
- Gel and blot imaging
- Protein analysis
- Data interpretation
Troubleshooting
Experiments do not always work the first time. The MBCF can help identify potential problems with experimental design, sample preparation, instrumentation, or molecular biology techniques.
Bring us a problem you are trying to solve, and we can help identify possible approaches.
Instrument Access and Training
The MBCF provides access to shared instumentations and training for researchers who need specialized molecular biology capabilities.
Instrument availability, training requirements and use procedures vary by instrument.

Who Can Use the MBCF?
ETSU researchers, students, educators, and other members of the surrounding research and educational community are encouraged to contact the MBCF to discuss potential uses of the facility.
