Koren Meadows Awarded National Surveying Scholarship
Koren Meadows, a senior in the Surveying and Mapping Science program at East Tennessee State University (ETSU), has been awarded the Slavoj (Dr. Ing Desider E.) Scholarship by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS). This scholarship, totaling $5,000, recognizes Meadows' outstanding academic achievements and commitment to the field of surveying.
NSPS is the voice of the professional surveying community in the United States and its territories, advocating for its members at both the national and state levels. Their dedication to supporting education in geospatial sciences is demonstrated through the annual distribution of over $30,000 in scholarships.
Koren's dedication to her studies and passion for surveying have not gone unnoticed. As an online student at ETSU, she has consistently excelled in her coursework, earning recognition as the 2024 Outstanding Surveying and Mapping student. Meadows' journey into surveying began as a career change from her previous role as an Early Childhood Special Education Teacher. Drawn to the field by her love for maps, strong computer skills, and affinity for mathematics, Meadows found the ETUS’s fully online program to be the perfect fit.
Reflecting on her experience as a distance student, Meadows commends the College of Business and Technology for its well-managed program, noting the support she has received from professors and staff. Despite the challenges of completing labs and assignments remotely, Meadows successfully navigated her studies with the assistance of a mentor surveyor in her local area.
Looking ahead, Koren plans to graduate in December 2024 and pursue licensure as a Surveyor-in-Training and plans to become licensed in multiple states. Koren currently works part time with Thompson & Litton, Inc. in Radford, VA, and plans to continue her career with them post-graduation.
Congratulations to Koren on this national recognition!
