Photography
Area of Study
The Photography curriculum grounds students in the creative, conceptual, and technical aspects of the medium. Courses cover topics and techniques in black and white, color, film, digital, and studio photography. Introductory level courses are specific to particular tools and skills such as digital technology. Students are encouraged to use these techniques to facilitate their ideas and creative development. Class discussions, readings, presentations, and critiques foster a critical dialogue about issues in historical and contemporary photography. Intermediate and advanced courses focus on developing projects, refining personal vision, and further expanding the aesthetic, technical, conceptual, and professional skills to establish an artistic practice.
During the first year of study, graduate students are encouraged to explore different concepts and techniques. During the last two years of the program, they are expected to execute a cohesive, developed body of work.
