Extended Media
Area of Study
The Digital Material Studies Area is rooted in an interdisciplinary investigation blending traditional and extended media mediums. The Digital Material Studies curriculum is grounded in critical analysis, conceptual exploration and an acute understanding of contemporary issues through acquiring different media expertise and as well as technical abilities. Students will be pushed to hone their personal voice while developing the technical and critical expertise to become successful artists in a local and global contemporary discourse.
While it is possible to focus on a particular medium, our students are encouraged to take the time to explore different artistic avenue before solely devoting their time to one specific form. By taking classes in the Digital Material Studies area of study, students will be invited to experiment with additional medium and technics such as installation, sound, performance, social interaction, video, 3D printing or laser cutting. Self-assigned and independent projects exploring multiple media in 2D, 3D, or time based will be encouraged in intermediary and advanced level classes.
Students seeking a concentration in Digital Material Studies are welcome to develop an interest in additional media such as ceramics, drawing, fiber, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. Over a period of time, students are expected to develop an interdisciplinary but cohesive body of work for the BFA Thesis Exhibition.
