ETSU Funding Programs
ETSU offers internal funding programs for research and scholarly activities. Several are available only within the colleges in which the faculty member or student resides. Those open to the wider campus are detailed on ORSPA's Internal Funding Opportunities webpage.
2021-2022 Faculty Research Mentoring Cohort Program
The ETSU Faculty Research Mentoring Cohort is accepting proposals for the 2021-2022 academic year in partnership with the Office of Planning and Decision Support, the Provost’s Office, and the Applied Social Research Laboratory. The goal of this microgrant/mentoring program is to develop a research community to support faculty research design knowledge, skills and abilities. The program will support a select group of ETSU faculty in designing and implementing systematic, rigorous research investigations.

NIH R15 Eligibility
NIH restricts eligibility for R15 awards to institutions that receive less than $6M/year in NIH funding in 4 of the last 7 years; calculated on an institution-wide (total) basis for REAP awards to health professional colleges and calculated college-wide for AREA awards to non-professional biomedical sciences colleges.
ETSU has enjoyed many years of NIH REAP eligibility, receiving more than $7M in total NIH funding in 2020 and more than $6M in 2019 and 2018. Given this level of success, we expect to surpass $6M in total NIH awards again in 2021, making ETSU health sciences faculty ineligible for at least 4 years. The last date we will be eligible to submit REAP R15 applications will be for the June 25, 2021 deadline.
At this time, faculty in the non-professional colleges, including Arts and Sciences, remain eligible for R15 AREA awards as ETSU has not yet reached the $6M/year threshold for even one of the required 4 of 7 years.
Please contact ORSPA if you have any questions. Click here to view a Quick Guide to the 2019 Changes to NIH R15 Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) Program.
Limited Competition: Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (U-RISE)
