Amazon Web Services
What is AWS (Amazon Web Services)?
ETSU Faculty, Staff, and Students may take advantage of numerous cloud compute products (services and applications) provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS). The most frequently used services include storage (S3 buckets), high performance computing (EC2 advanced computing), and virtual desktop computing (WorkSpaces and AppStream2). But there are hundreds of AWS cloud products within 23 major cloud service categories. Explore the services by clicking on AWS Cloud Products or see one of the links below for a guided tour of AWS.

Please contact ITS-Research Computing Services. Everyone at ETSU has Single Sign-On access available to AWS services. We will help you set up the services you want to use, apply for AWS Research credits, and show you how to access AWS resources.
Digital Research Data Storage & Backup on AWS
AWS is one of the cloud services that has been approved by the Research Advisory Council as suitable for storage and backup of digital research data, including HIPAA and other sensitive data. Digital research data other than HIPAA data may also be stored and backed up on your ETSU OneDrive for Business account. The AWS cloud makes it possible to assure that your data remain in the US; for example, you can designate storage in northern Virginia (for lower latency) and automate back up in Ohio, Oregon, or California.
HIPAA and Highly Sensitive Identifiable Human Subject Data Storage & Backup on AWS:
- The study, including data management plan, must be IRB approved.
- Study staff access is limited to least-privilege required.
- PI Checklist must be completed with ITS-Research Computing Services.
