The Tennessee Stroke Registry was implemented in 2009 through a bill enacted by the 105th General Assembly of the State of Tennessee. The Stroke Registry Act of 2008 called for the East Tennessee State University College of Public Health to maintain a statewide stroke database and report statistics on stroke prevalence, mortality, and performance metrics based on the American Health Association's Get With the Guidelines standards. Stroke legislation was updated in July 2017 to require all primary and comprehensive stroke centers in the state of Tennessee to report their data to the Tennessee Stroke Registry. The Stroke Registry completes an annual report with data input by Tennessee hospitals into the American Heart's Patient Management Tool and is released yearly in June.
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and the sixth leading cause of death in Tennessee and claimed more than 3,500 Tennessee lives in 2017. Tennessee is part of what is known as the Stroke Belt of the United States due to its high prevalence of stroke and stroke risk factors.
