Nurse practitioner trainees are those completing their second year in the master’s degree program for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree.
Hours completed in this training satisfy the preceptor and hourly requirements for NRSE 5411 and NRSE 6950.
Across both semesters, these trainees gain a high-quality, closely supervised experience in an integrated clinical setting. Trainees will work in fully integrated healthcare teams across the spectrum of primary care including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology. They gain clinical experiences with a wide range of presenting problems both in the context of warm handoffs and routine referral. They learn key skills around focused intervention, a population health approach, and serving as a consultant to an interprofessional team. In the first semester, these experiences and skills are focused on learning key recommendations and protocols around behavior change technology (i.e., crisis management, motivational interviewing, assessing functional impairment, behavioral activation, values exploration, perspective-shifting). In the second semester, these experiences include the opportunity to consult regarding psychiatric medication recommendations.
