Department of Continuing Education for Health Professionals
Mission: To provide lifelong learning opportunities that meet the needs of faculty and health care professionals in Tennessee and the surrounding Appalachian region.
Vision: To be the region’s leading provider of continuing education in health care.
Purpose: To enhance the knowledge, skills and competencies of faculty and health care professionals leading to improved community health and patient outcomes.
Content Areas:
- All areas of medical knowledge (research and patient care), clinical skills, interprofessional
practice, interpersonal and communication skills, ethics and professionalism, practice-based
learning and improvement, and systems-based practice, including changes in health
policy and health care delivery
- Improvement in practice through activities that link CE to quality improvement, patient
safety and improved patient care
- Prevention, behavioral health and disease states (identified as public health priorities),
patient safety and quality improvement
- Special needs of the region's ethnic and socioeconomic populations
- Development and/or distribution of supplemental tools and resources
Target Audience:
The target audience includes health care teams representing primary and specialty care practitioners within: - ETSU Quillen College of Medicine, ETSU Health Associated Colleges, and alumni
- Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina communities
Types of Activities:
CEHP staff will design, develop, implement and evaluate educational programming that supports the continuing professional development of health care professionals to better serve patients, the public, and the professions. - To provide evidence-based CE activities that emphasize research and patient care.
Coverage of these subject areas will be accomplished through special conferences,
regularly scheduled series (such as grand rounds, case-conferences), enduring materials,
web-based CE, learning from teaching, performance improvement CE, and other formats
as needed.
- To design educational activities which provide the most effective learning experience
and enhance the delivery of CE programming.
- Jointly sponsored programs and partnerships with like-minded institutions or organizations
in the region is a priority for the Department of CEHP.
Expected Results: - The CE program will provide quality educational activities that address identified
educational needs of health care professionals and enhance their ability to improve
health outcomes of patients and their communities.
- The Department of CEHP will evaluate and assess activity outcomes to determine changes in competence of these professionals and, for selected activities, ascertain whether changes in performance have occurred. Methods of evaluation may include learner satisfaction, pre- and post-activity knowledge assessment, intended or self-reported changes in practice, performance data, and other quality indicators.
