Audiology
ASLP Student Research Fund
- Purpose: to provide financial support for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology
students engaged in research projects in the College of Health Sciences at ETSU.
- The Chair of the ASLP Department will determine the allocation of funds for appropriated educational expenses with the assistance of a departmental committee.
Kirbo Foundation Audiology Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students enrolled in the Audiology Program of the College of Health Sciences at East Tennessee State University. The endowment is established by Mr. Charles Kirbo in gratitude for the exceptional education his daughter, Amelia Kirbo, received as an Au.D. student at ETSU. Amelia graduated in May of 2015.
- The Audiology faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Kirbo Scholarship:
- Each candidate must have successfully completed their second year of the Doctor of Audiology Program.
- The student must have a graduate GPA of 3.5 or higher and have a strong potential to be a successful leader in the profession.
- Have documented financial need.
Laurie Higgins Audiology Scholarship
- Purpose: the Laurie Higgins Audiology Scholarship is awarded to deserving students enrolled in the Audiology Graduate Program in the College of Health Sciences at East Tennessee State University.
- The Audiology faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Higgins Scholarship:
- Be a student in the audiology program.
- Have documented financial need.
- Maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
- Preference will be given to audiology students from Unicoi, Washington, Carter, and Johnson counties in Tennessee in the order listed.
Dr. Stephanie Rouse Hey Friend Memorial Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to 2nd or 3rd year Audiology students,
with priority given to students with an interest in vestibular disorders and a genuine
interest in improving the lives of others.
- Criteria determined by scholarship selection committee.
Kim Osucha Memorial Scholarship
- The Kim Osucha Memorial Scholarship was established in 2021 to honor Kim Osucha, Au.D., who graduated from our program in 2015. She lost her battle to cancer in May of 2020. The Scholarship is awarded to a third year AuD student.
- The ideal student is one who mirrors the best of Kim’s character: is living life to its fullest; who faces adversity with grace, strength, and a positive outlook; is involved in outreach and community service; sees the value in travel; is naturally comfortable with patients; has strong relationships with other students in the program; has a passion to help individuals with hearing loss and related health conditions; and has a strong bedside manner.
- Preference will be given to applicants having a personal experience with hearing loss,
coming to ETSU from out of state, and after graduation, planning to work with veterans
or adults.
Judith and Dr. David Johnson Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Scholarship
- Priority is given to current 2nd year SLP students and if there are no qualified SLP students, then 3rd year AuD students may be considered.
- Preference is for those who plan to establish a pediatric practice.
- Purpose: to provide financial support for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology
students engaged in research projects in the College of Health Sciences at ETSU.

Respiratory Therapy
Sam D. and Jonelle M. Coffey Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students enrolled in the Respiratory Therapy program of the Allied Health Sciences department in the College of Health Sciences at ETSU. Mr. Coffey, a 1973 graduate of ETSU, recognized that many students need extra financial help and encouragement to achieve their academic goals.
- The Respiratory Therapy faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the
Coffey Scholarship:
- The student must be entering their final semester of the program.
- Each candidate must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Have a strong potential to be successful as a leader in a Respiratory Therapy career.
- Must have documented financial need.
Dr. Donald A. Samples Cardiopulmonary Science Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students enrolled in the Respiratory Therapy program in the College of Health Sciences at East Tennessee State University.
- The Respiratory Therapy faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the
Samples scholarship:
- Have documented financial need.
- Have successfully completed their junior year of the Respiratory Therapy program.
- Have an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher in the Respiratory Therapy curriculum.
- Have a strong potential to be a successful leader in the profession.
NBRC Respiratory Therapy Scholarship
One-time scholarship for Respiratory Therapy student/s with a minimum GPA of 2.0, enrolled full- or part-time.

Dental Hygiene
Lou Elam Reynolds Scholarship
- Purpose: Two awards will be made each year. One award is to cover the cost of required
instruments for a first semester student in the Dental Hygiene program; second award
is for the purchase of an ultrasonic scaler for a second semester student in the Dental
Hygiene program.
- Criteria determined by scholarship selection committee.
Janyce Ralston Dudney Dental Hygiene Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program in the Department of Allied Health Sciences in the College of Health Sciences at East Tennessee State University. The scholarship was established by William D. and Janyce Ralston Dudney. Mrs. Dudney is a 1975 and 1976 graduate of ETSU.
- The committee shall consider the following criteria in awarding the Dudney Scholarship:
- The student must be entering their senior year in the ETSU Dental Hygiene program.
- Must have documented financial need.
- Each candidate must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Must demonstrate, in the opinion of the Dental Hygiene faculty, a commitment for and the ability to succeed in the Dental Hygiene profession.
The First District Dental Society & Alliance to the First District Dental Society Endowment
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students, provide funds for scholarly activities, and provide general support of the Dental Hygiene program in the Department of Allied Health Sciences in the College of Health Sciences. The fund was established through the generosity of the Auxiliary to the First District Dental Society.
- The Dental Hygiene faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the First
District Dental Scholarship:
- The scholarship will be awarded to students entering their spring semester in the senior year of the bachelor's degree program in Dental Hygiene.
- Students must exhibit excellent academic achievements and have potential for success in the Dental Hygiene profession.
- Candidates must display a degree of improvement in the program.
- Students must show evidence of a caring attitude.
Dr. Francis Ward Morgan Memorial Scholarship
- Purpose: to generate scholarships for deserving students of the Dental Hygiene department at East Tennessee State University and to honor the memory of Dr. Morgan. This endowment has been established by family and friends of Dr. Francis Ward Morgan who served the university for 15 years.
- The Faculty Committee appointed by the Chairperson of the Department of Allied Health
Sciences considers the following criteria when awarding the Dr. Morgan Scholarship:
- The applicant must be a declared Dental Hygiene major
- Must be a second year Dental Hygiene student.
- The student must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
- In the judgment of the committee, the candidate must possess potential for a successful career in dental hygiene.
- Financial need should be considered but not a deciding factor.
- Purpose: Two awards will be made each year. One award is to cover the cost of required
instruments for a first semester student in the Dental Hygiene program; second award
is for the purchase of an ultrasonic scaler for a second semester student in the Dental
Hygiene program.

Dr. Mary Louise McBee Scholarship
Requirements:
- Declared major in Kinesiology/Exercise Science
- Have a minimum cumulative gpa of at least 2.5
- Documented financial need may be considered
- Applicants must meet all requirements for regular admission to ETSU
- Applicants must be full-time students

Nutrition
Harryet S. Blackwell Nutrition Scholarship
- Purpose: The Harryet S. Blackwell Nutrition Scholarship was established to honor Mrs. Blackwell's years of dedicated service to the Department of Home Economics where she taught from 1951-1979. Her subject areas were food science and Home Economics education, and her influence reached from helping families with basic food preperation to inspiring students to continue their education. One $500 scholarship will be offered each year.
- The Nutrition faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Blackwell
Scholarship:
- The student must be currently enrolled in the Nutrition and Dietetics program.
- Candidates must show a commitment and professional promise to pursue a career in Nutrition.
- Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Must have documentation of financial need.
- Preference will be given to candidates from the following counties in Northeast Tennessee: Washington, Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, Sullivan, Greene, Hawkins, and Hancock and the following counties in Southwest Virginia: Scott, Washington, and Lee.
Juanita West Proffitt Scholarship
- Purpose: to generate funds for students enrolled in the Nutrition and Dietetics program. Ms. Proffitt graduated from ETSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1960 and a Master of Science degree in Vocational-Technical Education with an emphasis in Home Economics in 1984. She returned to school as an adult student, commuting 80 miles each day to complete her degree. One scholarship of $500 will be offered each year.
- The Nutrition faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Proffitt Scholarship:
- The student must currently be enrolled in the Nutrition and Dietetics program.
- Students must have 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Must have a documented financial need.
- Preference will be given to students from Western North Carolina counties: Yancey, Madison, Buncombe; and Northeast Tennessee Counties: Washington, Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, Sullivan, Greene, Hawkins, and Hancock.
Vivian V. Rockwood Scholarship
- Purpose: to generate scholarships for students enrolled in the Nutrition and Dietetics program in the College of Health Sciences at ETSU. Ms. Rockwood served as the Chairperson of the Department of Home Economics at ETSU from 1958-1976. Four $1500 scholarships will be offered each year.
- The Nutrition faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Rockwood Scholarship:
- Candidates must be a senior in the Nutrition and Dietetics program, submitting advanced study plans at ETSU.
- Students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
- In the judgment of the committee, demonstrate potential for a successful career in Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Financial need may be considered but will not be a deciding factor.
Amelia G. Brown Nutrition and Dietetics Scholarship
- Purpose: To provide program assistance for the Nutrition and Dietetics Program in the Department of Allied Health Sciences in the College of Health Sciences at East Tennessee State University. The Amelia G. Brown Nutrition and Dietetics Scholarship was established by Amelia Brown, class of 1969 with a major in Home Economics Education. Dr. Brown served the university for 30 years, reaching the rank of full professor, as well as 13 years as the Chair of the Department of Applied Human Sciences, six years as Associate Dean in the College of Applied Science and Technology, and six years as Associate Dean of Transfer Articulation. One scholarship will be offered each year.
- The Nutrition faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Brown Scholarship:
- The student must currently be enrolled in the Nutrition and Dietetics program.
- Candidates must possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Students must be an active member of a student professional organization or honor society within the Nutrition and Dietetics program, if offered at the university.

Physical Therapy
Duane Williams PT Founders Scholarship
- Purpose: to support research endeavors of the faculty in the Physical Therapy Department.
- Students in their second year of the DPT program are eligible.
- Additional criteria determined by the scholarship selection committee.
William M. "Mac" Hensley Scholarship
- Purpose: The William M. "Mac" Hensley Scholarship was established to honor the many accomplishments in the practice of Physical Therapy made by Mr. Hensley.
- The Physical Therapy Committee shall consider the following criteria in awarding the
scholarships:
- Must be a Tennessee resident.
- Reflect high moral character.
- Candidates must have completed four semesters in the ETSU Physical Therapy program.
- Have documented financial need.
- In the opinion of the selection committee, a desire to help people through the practice of Physical Therapy
Paul E. and Nancy Stanton Family Scholarship
- Purpose: This scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Paul E. Stanton, Jr. to provide scholarships for deserving students enrolled in the Physical Therapy program.
- The Physical Therapy Committee shall consider the following criteria in awarding the
Stanton Scholarship:
- Students applying for this scholarship must be in their second year in the Physical Therapy program at ETSU.
- Candidates must have documented financial need.
PT Pros/Hauser Family Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students enrolled in the Department of Physical Therapy at East Tennessee State University.
- Dr. Connie Davis Hauser, ETSU Class of 1971, is a partner in PT Pros, a physical therapy
company with clinical sites in Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina.
- Must be a second year student in the Physical Therapy program.
- Preference will be given to candidates who are residents of Northeast Tennessee, Southeast
Kentucky or Southwest Virginia.
- Must have documented financial need.
- The recipient must agree to meet with Dr. Connie Hauser, the Hauser family and PT Pros clinic staff at a PT Pros clinic of the donor's choosing, prior to graduation. ETSU Department of Physical Therapy will assist the student with setting up this meeting and with the cost of travel.
- Purpose: to support research endeavors of the faculty in the Physical Therapy Department.

Radiologic Science
Joan Allison Deardon Memorial Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students pursuing a degree in radiology.
- The Allied Health Sciences Scholarship Committee shall consider the following criteria.
- Preference will be given to graduates of University High, followed by students from the region.
- Must be accepted into the Radiologic Science program to maintain continuous enrollment.
Phil Carney Radiologic Science Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide financial assistance to eligible students enrolled in the Radiologic Science program at East Tennessee State University. The endowment was established to memorialize the legacy of Phil Carney who served as the Director of Radiography for 39 years at Le Conte Medical Center in Sevierville, TN. Mr. Carney was a mentor to many students and made a lasting impact on their lives.
- The Radiologic Science faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Carney
Scholarship:
- The student must be enrolled in the Radiologic Science program at ETSU.
- Students must be in good academic standing.
- Preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need.
- Preference is given to students enrolled in the summer semester.

Social Work
Davis Murphy Scholarship
- Purpose: Barbara Murphy Brooks, in honor of her parents, Rush W. and Celma Davis Murphy, has generously set up a fund for the ETSU Department of Social Work to award four annual scholarships to BSW students (two awards on campus, two awards off campus). The scholarship is a $2,000 award, over two semesters; four awards in total.
- The Social Work faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Davis Murphy
Scholarship:
- The student must be enrolled in the Social Work undergraduate program and completed their first year of study.
- Preference will be given to students who are in-state.
- Documented financial need is required.
- Candidates must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- A short essay must be written that addresses the following: Human service experience to date and what you learned from those experiences; Your long-term and short-term goals following graduation with your BSW degree; and any financial need information that you feel would be helpful for the faculty to consider when reviewing your application.
- The application deadline for the Davis Murphy Scholarship is March 15th.
Paul Bashea Williams Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide the educational benefits of a diverse student body to the entire university. These benefits include cross-cultural understanding, helping break down racial stereotypes, enabling students to better understand people of different races, preparing students for entry into a diverse workforce and society, cultivating leaders with legitimacy in the eyes of the citizenry, and promoting a robust exchange of ideas. For this scholarship, race-neutral alternatives do not suffice.
- To be considered each applicant must:
- Be enrolled in an ETSU Bachelors or Masters in Social Work program.
- Have a 3.0 minimum GPA.
- Recipient will receive mentoring from Paul Williams, as arranged by the department.
Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide assistance to deserving students enrolled in the Department of Social Work at East Tennessee State University.
- The Social Work faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Michael
Phillips Memorial Scholarship:
- Have graduated from Unicoi County High School majoring in the field of Social Work.
- Priority will be given to students with documented financial need.
Michael G. Johnston Academic Scholarship
- Purpose: to provide assistance to deserving students enrolled in the Department of Social Work at East Tennessee State University.
- Award will be split between 2, $500 installments, covering the 2 semesters of the academic year.
- The Social Work faculty consider the following criteria when awarding the Michael
G. Johnston Academic Scholarship:
- Strong academic performance.
- A desire to stay in the area after graduation.
- Preference given to students who are in-state or live in a bordering county.
- Financial need will be considered but not a deciding factor.
Claude Green Jr. Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is dedicated to Claude Greene, Jr.'s memory. Claude was an artist at heart, although he worked as a contractor. He was particularly skilled in small remodeling projects turning visions into reality. Despite facing numerous challenges, Claude remained a positive and humorous person who was always willing to make people laugh.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who is currently enrolled in the ETSU Bachelors or Masters in Social Work program and has a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to first-generation college students and/or those who have a strong interest in social justice advocacy work. The scholarship award will be divided into two equal installments of $500, which will cover the two semesters of the academic year.
Legacy Social Work Scholarship
This is a needs-based scholarship for a student pursuing an MSW degree.

Speech-Language Pathology
Mary Violette Dearstone Dickerson Speech-Language Pathology Scholarship Fund
- Purpose: to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students enrolled in the Speech-Language Pathology program at East Tennessee State University. This scholarship fund was established by Marvin H. Dickerson, Ph.D., in memory of his wife, Mary V. Dickerson, Ph.D. and in honor of the other 1955 ETSU graduates who were the first students to receive degrees with majors in "Speech Correction," now named Speech-Language Pathology.
- The Mary V. D. Dickerson SLP Scholarship Committee considers the following criteria
when awarding the Mary V. Dickerson Scholarship:
- Candidates must have a minimum 3.85 overall GPA.
- The student must demonstrate a strong potential for leadership in the Speech-Language Pathology profession.
- The student must demonstrate promise for significant clinical achievement in the profession.
- One letter of recommendation from either a graduate instructor (excluding committee members) or a clinical supervisor (on-site or off-site preceptor)(excluding the committee members) is required.
- Candidates must write a 400-word essay describing their vision of the SLP's role in the professional and local community.

Scott C. Dulebohn Scholarship
- Students enrolled in a Clinical & Rehabilitative Health Sciences program who has overcome adversity; preferably from a single parent household are eligible.
BlueCare LINCS Scholarship
Open to CHS students who have worked for an approved employer at least 8 months of the prior year as a direct care professional for adults with disabilities.
Joseph Muse Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is open to members of the Sigma Chi Fraternity with any major in CHS.
