Philosophy and Humanities

Philosophy is quite unlike any other field.

It is unique both in its methods and in the nature and breadth of its subject matter. Philosophy pursues questions in every dimension of human life, and its techniques apply to problems in any field of study or endeavor.

The Department of Philosophy & Humanities offers three concentrations of the philosophy major:  traditional Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Justice, Ethics, and Law.  Students may pursue either a B.A. or B.S. degree.  Minors are also offered in Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Humanities.

David Harker joined the Department in 2006, after completing his doctorate at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has been Chair of the department since 2022.

Employers want—and reward—many of the capacities that the study of philosophy develops. Philosophy majors find jobs in nearly every field and earn higher mid-career salaries than majors such as chemistry, marketing, information technology, and business management.

A third of the students currently majoring in Philosophy at ETSU are double-majors. Some popular majors recently paired with Philosophy include Psychology, History, Theater, Political Science, Microbiology, and Economics. Talk to an advisor about potential pathways to a double-major.
