Mathew Wilkinson, cellist and conductor, has been the Director of the Maryville High School Orchestra since 2010. Prior to that position he worked for the Knox County Schools, first in the “Strings in the Schools” program and then as the Orchestra Director at Karns Middle and High Schools. As an educator, Mr. Wilkinson has served as conductor for the East Tennessee Junior Clinics, the Knox County Honors Orchestra, Maryville College Orchestra and was the founding conductor of the Scruffy City Orchestra in Knoxville, TN. Mr. Wilkinson serves as principal cellist with the Symphony of the Mountains and has performed with the Knoxville Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony, Oak Ridge Symphony, Bryan Symphony, Roanoke Symphony, Eugene Symphony, Corvalis Symphony, and the Oregon Mozart Players. He has attended numerous summer festivals including the National Repertory Orchestra and the Meadowmount School of Music.
Mr. Wilkinson has a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from The University of Oregon, as well as a Master of Music Education degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is an active member of the National Association for Music Education, Tennessee Music Educators Association, and East Tennessee Schools Band and Orchestra Association where he served as the orchestra representative for six years. Past Teachers include Ko Iwasaki, Suren Bagratuni, Steven Pologe, Dr. Wesley Baldwin, and Hans Jensen Jorgen. He currently lives in Knoxville, TN with his wife Jeanine Wilkinson and two children Sofia and Mya.
