The Department of Literature and Language currently offers two programs in graduate study. We offer a Master's Degree in English for those interested in teaching English and literature at the college and university level. If you need information about the graduate program in English for the ETSU Department of Literature and Language, please contact Dr. Matthew Holtmeier, our department's Coordinator for Graduate School.
We also offer a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, a program intended for those who wish to teach English abroad or to non-native adult speakers in the United States. The graduate-level certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages can be obtained independently or in conjunction with the MA in English. The TESOL Certificate requires eighteen credits, nine of which can overlap with the MA credits; typically, only one extra semester of study is involved. For specific TESOL Certificate requirements, contact Dr. Theresa McGarry and see the TESOL homepage.
In addition to the MA in English and TESOL programs, Literature and Language now offers a graduate certificate in Healthcare Spanish. The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Spanish is intended for graduate students in the health professions at ETSU. This certification program prepares health professionals to interact with Spanish-speaking patients and their families through acquisition of the necessary level of speaking and listening proficiency in Spanish, especially with terminology and grammar structures used in a healthcare setting, as well as a solid understanding of social and cultural issues related to the Hispanic population and healthcare. For specific requirements, contact Dr. Katrina Heil and see the Healthcare Spanish website.
