Mark D. Baumgartner lives in Johnson City with his wife and family, where he is an associate professor at ETSU and director of the minor in creative writing. His work has been featured in journals such as The Southern Review, Bellingham Review, Yemassee, Phoebe, Tampa Review and Wisconsin Review, and he has worked as a fiction editor at Mid-American Review, River Styx and Witness. He earned an MFA degree from Bowling Green State University in 2005, and a PhD from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in 2010, where he was a Schaeffer/Black Mountain Fellow in creative writing. Excerpts of his first novel, Mariah Black, have recently appeared in Confrontation and Silk Road. A third excerpt, “The Great Siwash Shoe War,” won Fugue’s annual fiction prize, judged by Kevin Canty. Dr. Baumgartner’s teaching interests include creative writing (fiction and screenwriting), American literature and world literature. He is currently editor-in-chief of Aethlon: The Journal of Sport Literature, and teaches a course in literature of sport.
