Session Information
Wellness in Collaboration
Presenters: Marla Gentile, Riley Sailor and Lees- McRae College
Our Wellness Initiative is not self contained. We reach out to every area of our college community. Our activities, workshops and events are absorbed into the events and learning opportunities presented by departments within Student Affairs, Student Support Services, Academics and Athletics, including Campus Life, Residence Life, Social Justice Initiatives, Outdoor Recreation, Campus Recreation, Career Services, Theatre Arts, Wildlife Biology/Rehabilitation and Nursing programs. We collaborate with all the department heads in order to reach as many students as possible. We incorporate eight segments of Wellness into all of our programs to provide a holistic approach to wellness, and our goal is for our students to learn to balance their lives and to create healthy patterns of living through the mind/body/spirit connection
Self Care for Students
Presenters: Marla Gentile and Lizzy Gardner
This program will present a module that we offer to students in first year seminar and in various RD/RA workshops. We also present this workshop to the Nursing Students. This presentation will mimic the program that we use which teaches students to reduce and/or prevent overwhelming stress during their college years. Newer students are targeted since many experience adjustment issues and homesickness and have difficulty balancing academics with athletics, campus events and social interactions. This program includes information regarding exercise, healthy eating habits, sleep hygiene, mindfulness and meditation, deep breathing, positive affirmations and other tools to help create a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
Best Place to Work and Learn: Healthy Campus Initiatives at Cleveland State Community College
Presenters: Dr. Michele Wollert and Emily Alexander
Cleveland State’s 5-Year Strategic Plan, culminating in 2020, states that the school will be known as a “Best Place to Work” among community colleges in the Southeast. Part of this plan involves fully implementing the Healthy Campus Initiative, including an annual survey to assess the impact on the campus community. Additionally, students in Phi Theta Kappa, the two-year college honor society, instituted a Fall 2019 project to improve healthy campus activities for both students and employees. This session will describe healthy campus activities from 2015 to 2019 and share survey results concerning wellness. Participants will take a Real Age mini-quiz to determine how their activities are impacting their biological age and discuss their results in small groups. This session relates to the conference theme by sharing healthy campus best practices from a regional community college. Participants should gain ideas for implementing healthy activities in their college/university and their own lives.

“More than Sympathy Cards and Flowers: Promoting and Practicing Self-Care, Providing Support, and Leading During Grief”
Presenter: Kari Albarado
Often in higher education we have been exposed to the concept of leaving personal problems at the door when you walk into work. This mindset can create an environment where we fail to practice self-care through our own grief and where we may miss the mark in providing support to our students, professional staff members, and direct reports as they experience grief. This session will explore the intersection of personal and professional lives and how to create an environment of comfortable communication where well-being, self-care, and support during grief are a priority.
Transforming Culture: Cora Cox Helping. Our. Mentees. Excel (HOME) Peer Mentoring Program
Presenter: Jane Alexander
The Northeast State Alpha Iota Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-Year College researched adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), specifically the following two questions: (1) Is there a link between ACEs and future involvement in the criminal legal system? (2) If so, what strategies exist to change that course? Our research identified an ACEs-to-prison pipeline and evidence that healthy relationships can mitigate the negative impact of ACEs.
Research confirmed the ACEs-to-prison pipeline, and we identified the effectiveness of—and the need for—trauma-informed near-peer mentoring. Through collaboration with state and local officials, we identified a pilot location at a local alternative high school, Cora Cox Academy (CCA). We recruited and trained 13 mentors who are serving 45 students weekly throughout the academic year. Students and faculty report that the mentoring is positive, with faculty noticing an improvement in the classroom dynamic.
