The Quillen College of Medicine Counseling and Academic Resource Essential Services (CARES) unit offers medical students and postgraduate medical trainees a broad spectrum of holistic, comprehensive mental health services and wellness initiatives to proactively facilitate the well-being of students and their partners.

The CARES House offers a wide range of services and support to medical students, post-graduate medical trainees, residents, fellows, biomedical graduate students, and spouses/partners. Services include, but are not limited to:

Privacy
Respecting the need for privacy, every effort is made to protect the confidentiality needed for an effective therapeutic relationship. Client information is only kept in the CARES House internal electronic medical record which cannot be accessed by anyone other than your counselor.
Counseling is provided by a dedicated staff of professional counselors and psychologists who have no teaching or evaluative role at Quillen. Psychiatric services are provided by licensed medical providers who will not be interacting with them in an academic, clinical, or hospital environment as a teacher, attending, or preceptor.

Why should I see a counselor?
Counseling can be beneficial for anyone, but the stresses of medical school and training make this stage of life an optimum time to get support. Many students seek support for dealing with stress, anxiety, or navigating a particular challenge or life event. We encourage you to take advantage of this support! -
How much does it cost to see a counselor?
There is no cost to you for meeting with a counselor or psychiatrist at the CARES house.
Should you be prescribed a medication by a psychiatrist, the costs of that medication will be determined by your insurance provider.

The first meeting is an initial assessment to determine how best help you. Depending on the nature and severity of your concerns, you may be referred to appropriate outside resources better suited to meet your needs.

Do you provide therapy to children and adolescents?
No. To maximize resources, clinical services are limited to adults.

Do you provide crisis or after-hours services?
No. Please refer to the emergency resources available on the Student Affairs wellness page here. -
Can I meet with any counselor I choose?
The CARES counselors have unique skillsets and experiences working with different populations. You are welcome to request a specific counselor, but you may be placed on a waitlist if needed.

Where does counseling happen?
Counseling happens in the Medical Library.

My schedule is hectic. When are counselors and psychiatrists available?
Hours are flexible and evening hours are available.
Regular Hours:
Monday - Tuesday, 12:30pm - 9:00pm
Wednesday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm
*Call or check Titanium for available appointments.

I have never been to counseling. What should I expect?
The goal of counseling is to create a safe, non-judgemental space where you can talk about concerns and work toward your personal goals. You are in the driver's seat and your counselor is there for support and guidance!
