Minor in Educational Foundations

 

The minor in Educational Foundations is designed to provide an opportunity for students, through the integration of foundational educational knowledge, to become productive and enlightened about the field of education, and to understand the prospects that are available for multi-disciplinary and inter-agency interfacing with the educational community. The minor requires a total of 18 credit hours.

Students who complete the minor in Educational Foundations will demonstrate improved critical thinking, problem-solving, decision making, effective communication, and leadership. Those who complete the degree should do so with the transferable and highly valued skills of leaders and collaborators. Further, students should exit the program with a broad understanding of the essentials in the field of education, with a depth of understanding that allows them to operate effectively within this context.

The objective for the minor in Educational Foundations is to offer a foundational understanding of education to students who do not wish to become teachers, but may pursue careers that interface with the educational system.

Four or five courses are required of all students in the minor:

  • EDFN 2100 - Orientation to the Profession of Education & EDFN 2300 Foundations for Teaching OR
  • EDFN 2400 - Foundations for the Profession of Teaching
  • SPED 2300 - Exceptional Learners in Schools and Communities
  • LEAD 3320 - Leading Nonprofit Organizations
  • LEAD 4467 - Leadership Theory and Practice

In addition, all students are required to take either EDFN 3301 or EDFN 3310.

For the final 3 credit hours needed, student may choose from a small selection of electives.

Requirements for the degree:

  • EDFN 2100: Orientation to the Profession of Education & EDFN 2300: Foundations for Teaching* OR - 3
  • EDFN 2400: Foundations for the Profession of Teaching* - 3
  • SPED 2300: Exceptional Learners in Schools and Communities - 3
  • LEAD 3320: Leading Nonprofit Organizations - 3
  • LEAD 4467: Leadership Studies - 3

* Take either EDFN 2100 & EDFN 2300 or EDFN 2400 for a total of 3 credits

Required: Choose one of the following (3 Credit Hours):

 

  • EDFN 3301: Issues in Education (permit to class required) - 3
  • EDFN 3310: Educational Psychology - 3

Required Elective: Choose one of the following (3 Credit Hours):

 

  • ECED 4517: Family, School, Community Involvement - 3
  • SPED 4302: Family and Professional Partnerships - 3
  • EDFN 3301 or EDFN 3310 (whichever was not taken to satisfy basic requirements) - 3
