Women in Computer Science: Getting Involved in STEM

"Even with projected growth of 15-20% between 2012 and 2022, the vast majority of computer science jobs will be pursued and filled by men. As STEM-related industries on a whole add over 1.7 million jobs in the coming years, there continues to be a notable absence of women in the field. This trend begins well before entering the job market: girls account for more than half of all Advanced Placement (AP) test-takers, yet boys outnumber girls 4:1 in computer science exams. In Mississippi, Montana and Wyoming, not a single girl took the AP Computer Science examination in 2014.
There is a clear disconnect between the computer science industry and the message girls receive about their ability to succeed in tech organizations. This guide examines the history behind this disparity and how educators, parents, employers and computer scientists can reverse the trend."

Million Women Mentors

Million Women Mentors aim to advance women and girls in STEM careers through mentoring.  

National Vision and Goals of Million Women Mentors

Million Women Mentors (MWM) is a collective effort of corporate sponsors, strategic partner and more than 40 organizations representing over 18 million women and girls. MWM is an initiative of STEMconnector, owned by Diversified Search LLC, the national organization that works closely with corporations and other entities to assist in STEM best practices, corporate structure and smart STEM investments. 

Through ENGAGING one million mentors, our goals are to:

  • Increase the percentage of U.S. high school girls planning to pursue STEM careers, currently 13% 
  • Increase the percentage of U.S. young women pursuing undergraduate degrees in STEM fields in higher education up from 45%
  • Increase the percentage of U.S. women staying in STEM careers, currently 24%, through a workforce mentoring, paid internship and sponsorship programming.

We will:

  • lead a national call to action for corporations to join MWM and capture metrics around mentoring girls and young women in STEM
  • Provide and automated, scalable and easy-to-use platform to eliminate barriers and facilitate large numbers of STEM professionals (male and female) with tools to becoming effective mentors in partnership with 35 national organizations reaching over 18 million girls
  • Match participating corporations to scaled non-profit partners and educational institutions in need of STEM mentors and role models
  • Provide an environmental scan on "who" is doing "what" in mentoring, particularly women and girls
  • recognize best practice and "who is doing what" in mentoring girls (middle school through careers) in STEM learning

American Modeling Teacher Association Model Instruction

The American Modeling Teacher Association (AMTA)  is an organization of teachers, by teachers, and for teachers who utilize modeling instruction in the STEM teaching practice. They are beginning to develop a series of Summer Modeling Workshops that are generally three-weeks long and work through the pedagogy and content for a high school physics, chemistry, physical science, or biology course.  The focus of these workshops is to give teachers better implied experience in guided inquiry and cooperative learning by having them play the role of student and teacher during the process.
