Dr. Joseph O. Baker is a recognized expert in the social scientific study of religion, deviance, and politics. Drawing on theoretical traditions in sociology and criminology, and using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, he has authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, as well as four well-received books (American Secularism, Deviance Management, Fear Itself, and Paranormal America). His research has been covered in a wide variety of media outlets, and has received awards from professional organizations, such as the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. He is a former editor-in-chief of the journal Sociology of Religion.
