The Department of Appalachian Studies includes an interdisciplinary faculty and staff committed to serving their communities and region. As experts and leaders in their professional fields, they help to make ETSU the flagship university serving the Appalachian region.
Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services
ETSU is the only state university with a Department of Appalachian Studies, dedicated to serving our remarkable region. The Department offers a wide range of academic programs, including graduate studies and the renowned Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies program, the world’s oldest and largest program of its kind. The Department also includes the renowned Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services, comprised of the Regional Resources Institute, the Archives of Appalachia, the Institute for Appalachian Music and Culture, and the Reece Museum.
