Recovery Research (Note: Program is not currently accepting applications)
This certificate program is not currently accepting applications, but plans to relaunch in the Fall 2025 semester. This section will be updated as more information becomes available.
The Recovery Research graduate certificate prepares students to analyze and conduct studies about addiction and recovery support. Implementation of recovery support services currently outpaces research in this field; more is needed to inform the content and practice of effective recovery support services that can ultimately save lives. This certificate has broad job applications within a variety of fields including members of regional health systems, addiction treatment facilities, community-based organizations (CBOs), criminal justice, public health, clinical psychology, and more. It will also serve to improve content experience and training to supplement an NIH investigator biosketch which may lead to participation or leadership in externally funded recovery science studies.
The certificate is designed for graduate students, members of regional health systems, addiction treatment facilities, and other community-based organizations (CBOs) that are interested in analyzing, conducting, or participating in studies about recovery support.
Program
This certificate will include two courses in social work, two interprofessional courses (designed to enhance student skills in research methods for addiction and recovery research), and two non-credit bearing workshops addressing the responsible conduct of clinical/health services research.
All courses are online asynchronous. Students are invited to attend two workshops during their time in the certificate program. These workshops are held in-person and via Zoom in collaboration with ETSU’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) in the fall and ETSU’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Administration (ORSPA) in the spring. For those who cannot attend live, a recording will be available.

As a social worker, the Global Health certificate has given me the opportunity to work in interprofessional teams not only in the classroom but also globally through on-the-ground fieldwork. Being able to combine my experience in clinical mental health with a macro lens of global public health, I've gained new skills in research, interprofessional practice, and community work that would not have been possible without this certificate.
