Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in supervising and performing campus security, protecting property, facilities, citizens, staff and students; coordinating activities with law enforcement officers, and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Patrols and supervises others patrolling by foot or motor vehicle.
Supervises the maintenance and use of security equipment.
Keeps records and prepares reports.
Discourages unlawful activities.
Writes citations for traffic and parking violations.
Provides guidance in unusual situations or emergencies.
Discusses training procedures and job performance with other guards.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of campus policies and procedures and city, county and state laws.
Knowledge of geographic area of the campus.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of security supervision.
Knowledge of the campus and local area provisions for emergency situations.
Ability to ascertain facts through personal contact and observations and to determine proper course of action.
Ability to perform duties firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
Ability to operate all equipment necessary in the performance of required duties.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the students, the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation conducted by the employing agency. Graduation from a standard high school, or possess equivalency.
Be at least 18 years of age. Experience in security work. Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances and not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States. Possession of a valid Tennessee operator license as issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety.
