Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in live "on air" time and in producing and assisting in the production of radio programs and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Runs various programs which have been prerecorded on tape.
Selects records for programs.
Clears news from newswire and prepares and reads newscasts.
Selects and reads various items of local interest and/or runs prerecorded public service announcements.
Produces programs by locating records, dubbing records to tapes, recording musical performances, interviewing various people, etc. and editing these into finished programs.
Takes required readings from transmitters.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the practices and procedures involved with radio announcing and the production of prerecorded radio programs.
Knowledge of the proper techniques of live radio announcing.
Knowledge of the equipment and materials used in radio broadcasting.
Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations regarding commercial radio broadcasts.
Ability to operate the necessary equipment involved in program production and radio announcing.
Ability to express thoughts, comments and information clearly, concisely and convincingly, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in radio announcing and basic program production. Possession of a Restricted Radiotelephone operator permit.
