Definition

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in conducting tours and demonstrating dances, crafts, and songs. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Greets museum visitors and guides groups through buildings, sites, and grounds.

Explains display objects, artifacts and other items of historical significance.

Watches and observes visitors for vandalism, etc.

Performs traditional Native American dances and songs, renditions of rituals, formal ceremonies, etc.

Demonstrates various arts and crafts activities such as making pottery, stringing beads, weaving, working with cane and leather goods, etc.

Wears traditional Native American costumes and explains significance of various items of clothing.

Drives or rides to schools, meeting places, etc., to demonstrate dances, crafts, and songs.

Locks and unlocks houses, buildings, etc.

Picks up trash and performs general cleaning duties such as sweeping floors.

Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of Native American history and traditions.

Ability to perform traditional Native American dances and songs.

Skill in arts and crafts common to historical Native American lifestyles.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to deal with a variety of people. 

Recommended Qualifications

Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. High school graduate or equivalent; post secondary school training and/or course work in Native American history or equivalent knowledge; plus experience in traditional Native American crafts such as pottery making, weaving, leather work, etc.; museum experience or training helpful; must possess valid operator's license.
