Definition 

Employees in this classification are under general supervision. Work performed in conducting various metallurgical procedures to determine physical properties and characteristics of metal and alloy samples. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Selects representative sample to be prepared.

Prepares samples according to procedures appropriate for sample properties. Mounts and polishes sample.

Makes complete photographic record of samples using reflected light microscopy.

Makes complete photographic record of samples using vacuum procedures and scanning electron microscopy.

Examines samples with other techniques such as energy dispersive x-ray, tension, radiography, and such.

Writes laboratory reports of findings.

Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of reflected light microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, sample preparation equipment, and other related equipment.

May direct work of others preparing samples and using equipment.

Performs other work as assigned. 

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of metallurgical testing procedures.

Knowledge of metallurgical sample preparations and examinations.

Knowledge of use and routine maintenance of instruments and equipment.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Ability to select, prepare, and examine metallurgical samples.

Ability to use, operate, and maintain necessary tools, equipment, and instruments.

Ability to calibrate and adjust to proper settings the various tools and instruments.

Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to provide basic instructions to others on the use of various tools, equipment and instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 

Recommended Qualifications

Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Two years of related college education or related two year degree plus a minimum of two years of relevant experience.
