Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in setting up and operating and/or supervising others setting up and operating machine tools and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Works with students in planning senior projects or school projects and makes or fabricates materials to a finished project.
Supervises, teaches, and serves as a resource person for students in shop classes by helping and aiding them in selection of materials and machines to use.
Sets up and operates and/or supervises others setting up and operating lathe, milling machine, shaper, or grinder to machine parts to specifications and verifies conformance of part to specifications.
Verifies dimensions and alignment with measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
Performs general machine shop work and building projects for the institution.
Maintains shop, labs, and parts of building for instructional purposes.
Assists in program development.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of instructional methods, materials, and programs.
Knowledge of mechanics as related to machine shop work.
Knowledge of machine shop mathematics.
Knowledge of metal properties.
Knowledge of lay-out machining procedures.
Ability to study specifications such as blueprint, sketch, or description of part to be made and plan sequence of operation.
Ability to measure, mark, and scribe dimensions in reference points to lay-out stock for machining.
Ability to make arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately.
Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
Ability to teach and instruct students in the use of a machine shop.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the students and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Completion of a two year course involving general machine shop procedures. Experience in general machine shop work.
