Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in maintaining security for campus wide lock system(s), installing and maintaining locks and related hardware, and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Plans and installs and/or directs the installation of lock systems for a building or an entire campus.
Maintains records of all keys issued for the entire campus.
Maintains inventory control on all key blanks, cylinders, bodies, etc., and orders new parts and supplies as needed.
May assign, direct and inspect the work of others performing basic locksmith work.
Inspects and verifies that proper hardware has been installed and works correctly on new construction or renovations.
Disassembles and reassembles cylinders.
Cuts keys to fit a particular combination of tumblers and replaces tumblers to fit a particular key.
Inspects and replaces broken or worn parts and makes or modifies parts.
Determines key type for cylinder on hand.
Reads or impressions cylinders to determine depth of key cut.
Picks locks.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of installing, repairing, and maintaining locks and related hardware.
Knowledge of a variety of locks and locking systems.
Knowledge of the use of common hand tools, machine tools, and tools common to the locksmith trade.
Ability to maintain security for keys, keying parts, and records for a lock system.
Ability to install and/or direct the installation of lock systems.
Ability to key and re-key locks to standard and master ring cylinders.
Ability to cut keys to fit a particular combination of tumblers.
Ability to pick locks.
Ability to use required tools and equipment.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience as a trained locksmith.
