Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in processing interlibrary loan requests, providing assistance to library patrons, and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Processes interlibrary loan requests by verifying certain elements of the request, locating the material, and preparing the necessary paperwork.
Receives and logs materials borrowed from other libraries.
Records and prepares interlibrary loan invoices for payment.
Communicates with other libraries by telephone or correspondence.
Maintains interlibrary loan transactions and correspondence files.
Records and tabulates number of requests processed.
Prepares materials to be sent back to libraries from which they have been borrowed.
Provides assistance to library patrons as needed.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of library materials and bibliographic tools.
Knowledge of interlibrary loan processes and procedures.
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
Ability to process requests in an orderly and efficient manner.
Ability to use necessary library materials, bibliographic materials, and office equipment.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the students, the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in related library work.
