Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in advanced nursery and greenhouse work, managing the university's landscape design operation and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs and supervises the performance of planting, cultivating and harvesting trees, shrubs, and ornamental flowering plants in the nursery and greenhouse.
Performs and supervises others performing special projects such as germination, propagating, seeding, budding, grafting, and layering. Conducts experiments in the greenhouse to develop plant hybrids suitable for use on the campus and to develop improvements in propagation, fertilization and watering techniques.
Designs landscape plants. Determines number and type of plants to be used and location for planting.
Operates various equipment in the performance of duties such as tractors, trucks, lawn mowers, tree setters, and irrigation equipment.
Examines plants and conducts tests to determine cultivation needs such as for fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of plant propagation and cultivation practices.
Knowledge of the use of fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.
Knowledge of the operation and use of equipment and materials used in the operation of a nursery and greenhouse.
Knowledge of landscaping design techniques.
Ability to follow instructions.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Associate degree with a concentration in horticulture or related area. Experience in field production and propagation. Eligible to acquire appropriate certification. Possession of a valid driver's license.
