Definition
Employees in this class are under the general supervision of the Director of Financial Aid. Work performed in processing applications for financial aid; communicating availability of financial aid, applications procedures and regulations regarding financial aid programs; analyzing and monitoring financial aid packages; and maintaining hard copy and computer records.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Processes applications for federal and non-federal financial aid and assists in coordinating awards process for Pell Grants and Tennessee Student Assistance Awards.
Processes outside agency awards, alumni awards, various institution foundation awards, and applications for various scholarships.
Coordinates the institution's regular work programs and college work study programs.
Processes applications for guaranteed student loans, plus loans, supplemental loans for students (SLS), various outside agency loans, and coordinates the institution's Loan Fund Program.
Communicates with students and parents regarding such financial aid related matters as available financial aid programs, eligibility requirements, application procedures and deadlines, cost of education, and registration and enrollment policies and procedures.
Posts award data and inputs other data into computer records and hard copy files and reconciles and balances computer generated reports with individual student records.
Assists in monitoring the total financial aid package of students to identify cases of apparent inordinate aggregate awards, over-awards, and inappropriate awards by making inferences based on knowledge of diverse guidelines and regulation of the various federal, state, institution and private grant and loan programs.
Directs the work activities of student workers.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of business English and arithmetic.
Knowledge of the guidelines and regulations pertaining to financial aid programs, including federal laws and regulations governing student-work programs.
Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in written form.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, students, and public.
Ability to extract information from conversations or documents.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Knowledge of organizational rules, regulations and procedures.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. High school education with a minimum of twelve months increasingly responsible work in a Financial Aid Office.
