Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in transmission and scanning electron microscopes, and preparing samples for microscopy. Performs other duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Operates transmission electron microscope.
Switches on electron beam, high voltage, and filament heating.
Focuses binocular viewing microscope.
Selects image detail suitable for higher magnification.
Operates scanning electron microscope.
Checks current and filament saturation.
Takes picture using Polaroid camera and processes film.
Prepares samples for microscopy by sectioning biological tissue and placing in various solutions staining sections and mounting on slides.
Performs routine maintenance on microscopes and equipment.
Explains and demonstrates how to operate equipment to students, faculty, etc.
Keeps records on equipment usage, supply inventory, service repairs, and maintenance manuals.
Occasionally performs demonstrations for classes.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Skill in use of transmission electron microscope.
Skill in use of scanning electron microscope.
Ability to prepare samples for microscopy.
Ability to provide technical assistance to others.
Knowledge of routine maintenance procedures.
Ability to maintain records.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. High school graduate or equivalent; two years experience as a lab technician with specialized training on electron microscope equipment.
