Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in working with and coordinating the activities of workers care for and milking dairy cattle and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Examines cows to detect diseases such as mastitis and conjunctivitis and injuries such as cuts and bruises.
Weighs and mixes feeds and feed supplements.
Washes cows' utters and assists in using milking machines.
Ensures that proper sanitary procedures are followed in the overall milking process.
Artificially inseminates cows.
Operates various farm equipment and tools as necessary.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the care and milking of dairy cattle.
Knowledge of diseases and injuries common to dairy cattle and basic preventative care.
Knowledge of proper sanitary procedures used in the milking process.
Knowledge of artificial insemination procedures.
Ability to detect injury or illness in dairy cattle and treat and/or follow a prescribed program of treatment.
Ability to weigh feeds and feed supplements according to general instructions.
Ability to coordinate the performance of routine manual tasks such as feeding and watering animals and cleaning facilities as well as the overall activities involved in a dairy operation.
Ability to operate required tools and equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.

Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduate from a standard high school. Experience in a dairy operation.
