Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in compounding chemicals and reagents; following and enforcing all safety regulations; maintain a working, up-to-date inventory of chemicals and supplies; maintaining student laboratory lockers with required equipment; assists in maintaining and repairing equipment; creating and maintaining an electronic inventory of chemicals and equipment; and, performs other related duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Compounds chemicals and reagents for all undergraduates, including all regents, reagent solutions, and unknowns for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry labs.
Follows and enforces all safety regulations in the Chemistry Department, including oversight of the general chemistry students.
Maintains a working, up-to-date inventory of chemicals and supplies necessary for General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Quantitative Analysis laboratories and communicates with the Chemical Hygiene Officer/Stockroom Coordinator for any necessary ordering.
Maintains and supplies the general chemistry laboratory student lockers; the organic chemistry laboratory student lockers; and the upper level laboratory student lockers with pieces of required equipment.
Maintains and trouble shoots scientific laboratory equipment including disassembly and reassembly.
Creates and maintains an up-to-date electronic inventory of chemicals and equipment, including safety issues associated with chemicals and their storage.
Develops and oversees a method for the effective checkout of chemicals and supplies from the stockroom.
Conducts nitrogen fills for NMR.
Picks up and delivers mail to campus post office and dean’s office.
Assembles and repairs items for the department.
Supervises student workers.
Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Working knowledge of how to safely and properly (quantitatively) prepare reagents
for undergraduate teaching laboratories.
Working knowledge of OSHA safety regulations as they apply to Chemistry.
Knowledge of word processing software and systems (Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel preferred).
Ability to help maintain/repair Chemistry equipment.
Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions carefully and completely.
Ability to use and operate required laboratory tools and equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school or equivalency required; bachelor’s degree in a field of science (chemistry preferred) required; one year of laboratory experience preferred. The candidate must document their successful completion of a quantitative analysis college class.
