Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in making and assembling carpentry products. Performs other duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Reads and interprets work orders and blueprints.
Determines exact dimensions.
Draws plans to exact dimensions.
Estimates and orders required materials.
Lays out dimensions on materials.
Cuts and fits materials together.
Prepares surfaces for staining and/or painting.
Uses specialized hand and machine tools common to the cabinetmaking trade, woodworking shop tools, and common hand tools.
Drives pickup or automobile.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to perceive small differences in objects and spatial relationships.
Ability to attend to visual details.
Willingness to work until job demands are met.
Ability to make precise arm-hand positioning movements where strength and speed are minimized.
Ability to plan and organize ones own work.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
Skill in the use of hand held power tools common to the carpentry trade.
Ability to make simple arithmetic computations.
Ability to work with others.
Skill in making precise manipulations with simple hand tools.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Vocational school certificate in Carpentry; OR completion of carpentry apprenticeship; OR high school carpentry course and two years experience; OR related experience (cabinet making, furniture making, etc.) plus one year of experience as a carpenter/helper.
