Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in the construction, repair and refinishing of wooden articles and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Constructs and repairs wooden fixtures, office equipment, cabinets, and furniture using wood working machines and hand tools.
Studies blueprints or drawings of articles to be made.
Sets up and operates such wood working machines as power saws, lathes, joiners, molders, and shapers to cut and shape parts from stock.
Trims component parts of joints to make them fit snugly using hand tools.
Glues, fits, and clamps parts and subassemblies together to form complete units.
Drives nails and other fasteners into joints at designated places to reinforce them.
Sands and scrapes surfaces and joints of articles to prepare them for finishing.
Finishes articles with materials such as stain, varnish, or paint by dipping, brushing or spraying.
Installs hardware such as hinges, catches, and pulls.
Repairs furniture, equipment and fixtures.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the materials, methods, and principles used in the performance of wooden article construction and repair.
Knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of required tools and equipment, both specialized and common.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to use and operate required tools and equipment.
Ability to read and follow specifications and blueprints.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Completion of standard apprenticeship in cabinetmaking.
