Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in assisting the manager in daily supervision and management of employees, facilities, and merchandise and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains responsibility for the rotation of full-time employees for overtime work and calls in part-time employees when necessary.
Schedules extra employees when necessary.
Buys school and office supplies, general merchandise and soft goods.
Insures that inventories are taken for each department in the bookstore and that required goods and materials are available.
Corresponds with suppliers concerning incorrectly processed orders or other discrepancies.
Approves refunds and error corrections made on cash registers, and reads and clears cash registers.
Insures that each department is covered by an employee at all times.
Keeps records and makes reports.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of basic bookstore or similar retail operations.
Knowledge of basic principles and methods of supervision.
Knowledge of business English and arithmetic.
Knowledge of inventory methods and techniques.
Ability to work under supervision and provide direction on a daily basis to other employees.
Ability to keep records and make reports.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in a variety of duties in a small to medium-sized retail operation with some of the experience being of a supervisory nature.
