Recreation
Due to the four distinct seasons, the recreational activities in Johnson City and the surrounding area are quite varied. Scenic beauty is provided by the Appalachian Mountains, Blue Ridge, and Great Smoky Mountains. A number of Tennessee State Parks and Virginia State Parks are close by and offer a lot of recreational opportunities.
The Appalachian Trail is within twenty miles. Also nearby is the Virginia Creeper Trail. Area lakes, rivers, and streams offer some of the nation's best fresh-water fishing. Boating, water skiing, sailing, canoeing and white water rafting are available in the immediate vicinity. There are also several TVA lakes in the area. Ten winter ski resorts, downhill and cross-country, are within a two-hour drive.
The Tweetsie Trail is a rails-to-trails project that runs between Johnson City and Elizabethton for approximately 10 miles. The trail provides opportunities for walking, hiking, running, biking, etc. on a relatively flat grade in a beautiful, natural setting.
