I was born and raised in the county of Sussex in England. I attended the University of Southampton and drove double-decker buses to help support my studies. I earned a PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of Southampton in 1977 and then moved to the USA. I did postdoctoral research at Missouri-Columbia and UT Memphis. I joined the Department of Physiology at ETSU in 1981 and was promoted to full professor in 1993.
My medical education teaching interests include kidney and endocrine physiology, fluid and acid-base balance, and small group learning. I oversee several courses on seminar and communication skills in the graduate program. My outside interests include judo, racquetball, and working some land that I own.
